Hi, Mark! Yes, good point. I did think about mentioning Sam, first, and that is a good "solution". Thank you for the welcome, and I do plan to be more active on Substack. :-)
Hi, Kim! Thank you for your kind comment. I think I'm to blame...puns aren't always clear to people. Heck, I don't "get" all puns and have to ask for an explanation sometimes, LOL! I'm so glad you stopped by, and I'm going to go visit your Publication now. :-)
I have to admit, I didn’t get it after the first read. But after reading a second time, I saw it clear as day. I enjoyed your story and your “story behind the story”, Jenise. It was a nice surprise to see your name pop up in my inbox.
Ha ha ha ha ha! Hey, Justin! Yeah, puns are tricky...I don't always understand every pun. But, I'm very happy you "got it" during your second reading. So, I don't blame the publication that rejected this story, I'll happily take the blame.
I'm trying to get back into writing and participating in this community. It's been a struggle, but I'm here now! :-)
Haha! Hey there! Who knows with publications...they’re all so subjective!
If you have any interest, you should send a 100-word memoir to Five Minutes. Check them out! They’re a neat little publication. They’ve published two of mine this past year. (In fact, I haven’t submitted anywhere else!) I’ve been having fun just writing here on Substack.
I hear you. It’s never easy getting back into it. It is nice to see you around, though! Take care! 😀
Thanks for the heads-up about "Five Minutes". I'll check them out. Spillwords Press still publishes my works, and I need to send them more before the year ends.
I love puns. Just ask Mark Starlin. We've engaged in a pun war or two. Good story.
Thank you! 😁 Scroll through the comments to find Mark's very good suggestion on how I could have improved this story for the publication.
Actually I had already done so and commented on Mark's comment! 🙂
I didn't get it the first read either. I had to really think about it. Maybe is Sam was mentioned first... 🤓 Welcome to Substack.
Oh, and thank you for subscribing!

You could also write something like Sam and Ella were sick to death of being blamed for every outbreak. Hopefully most people would get it then.
Oh, I think I got it, after the third read. 🤣 Cute, and so was you inside scoop! Rejection suck! Maybe editors are becoming brain dead, lol!

Take care as well, fellow writer in the trenches.
