The hearth blazed hot inside the Star & Cross. The men of Churchwood raised their steins and celebrated the Christmas lunch they provided to the village’s poor.
Suddenly, they heard such a clatter they ran to the pub’s windows.
A host of heavenly angels serenaded them, “God rest ye merry gentlemen!”
About this Story
Prompt: Write a fifty-word story set in a wintry pub. For an extra challenge, make a brief reference to a Christmas song or lyric.
I wrote 11 drafts before settling on this final version. I call this a “mashup”. What’s been mashed up?
They heard such a clatter (Clement Clarke Moore’s poem, Twas the Night Before Christmas)
A host of heavenly angels (Luke’s gospel, chapter 2)
God rest ye merry gentlemen (traditional English carol)
Writing 50-word tiny stories is a challenge. Challenges stretch my writing muscles.
I think I strained a few on this one, Lol! 😂🤣😂
Your Turn
I always enjoy hearing from you, dear readers!
God rest ye merry gentlemen is one of my favorite Christmas carols. I loved your story!
And a very merry Christmas to y'all. PS. saw the poem run LIVE in the Yukon. Wonderful memory, the crowd reaction to the finale set fire. Thanks.
