Thirteen years old, I sit on the floor, staring at our new TV bought for the occasion.
Large boots descend the ladder.
Lunar surface awaits.
One small step. One giant leap.
I catch my breath.
My heart changed, my imagination quickened, I plan my own small steps toward my dreams.

About this Story
Note: This post is a part of my “push” to publish my older works on Substack. I’m now publishing new works in between the ones I’m archiving here.
50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing
I wrote “Small Steps” in honor of the 1969 Moon Walk. I was twelve years old when this momentous event took place. I’m grateful I was alive to watch it all unfold.
Words cannot describe what I felt as I watched Armstrong and Aldrin walk on the surface of the Moon while I sat in our living room. My micro story captures only one of a thousand thoughts I had back then.
One thing I can say now is this: on that July day in 1969, it felt like we (humanity) could do almost anything.

That was so cool! I vaguely remember some part of it being at 2 am, and I snuck out to watch it on the b&w. It sure was a thing! Super nice retelling, Jenise!
You brought back the magic of the day, Jenise Lynn! I remember it well.
