He Kept His Promise
Short Fiction Story | Micro Fiction | Image Prompt

[200 words]
Frank removed the blindfold from Vanessa’s eyes.
She glanced at the sea foam caressing her bare feet, then she gazed across the ocean at the full moon. Its reflection shimmered on the water and on the wet sand.
Vanessa shook her head and turned to her husband. “Frank, you walked me blindfolded across the beach to this? What are we doing here?”
“It’s my anniversary present to you.”
“I’m confused. What’s the present?”
Frank gently turned Vanessa towards the sand. She gasped when she saw a large beach blanket with a small, low table on top. Solar candles flickered next to plates and wine glasses that glowed in the moonlight.
“Since I lost my job this year, I tried to be creative because we’re low on finances. You’ve been my best friend through all of the job interviews and rejections. And, you’re working at a job you don’t like. I know you’re tired.”
Vanessa wiped a tear from her eye. Frank turned her back towards the ocean.
“Remember when I proposed to you ten years ago?
“Of course. How could I forget?”
“What I said that night is my gift to you now. That night, I promised you the moon.”
About this Story
Pixabay.com sends me emails when the contributors I follow upload new images. When I saw this image of the couple and the full moon, the words “he promised her the moon” immediately popped into my thoughts. And, I framed this phrase in a positive sense, rather than its colloquial meaning.
I thought a micro fiction story fit the image best. I let the characters talk to me, and I capped it at 200 words. You’ll probably find a few plot holes, and that’s okay. There’s so much more I could have included in this tale, but I’ll leave that to your wonderful imagination, dear reader.
